The wine is concentrated and very aromatic. More structured and complex than previous vintages, the wine is beginning to reveal the special qualities of our steep mountainside vineyard. Full bodied with silky mouth coating tannins and notes of chocolate, dried strawberries, huckleberries, spice box, with leather and hints of a redwood forest on a summer day. While this wine can be enjoyed young if given an hour in a decanter, it has the structure to gain weight and depth if cellared three to fifteen years.
Wine Advocate The elegant, blue/purple-tinged, impressive 2004 Syrah Rattlesnake Rock exhibits a flowery character along with creme de cassis, full body, admirable fruit intensity, and good length. Score range: 91-94 Score: 94. —Robert Parker, August 2006.Wine Enthusiast Maybe it's the snake venom, but this is seriously good Syrah. Blackberry and cherry pie aromas and flavors, with caramelized oak, mocha, chocolate macaroon and vanilla extravagances that turn richer and richer with every sip. Defines Syrah's power and elegance with immediate, voluptuous pleasure. Score: 94. —Steve Heimoff, November 15, 2006.
Wine Spectator Distinctive for its bold blueberry, spice and licorice notes and its rustic, intense flavors of plum, smoky meat and cedar. Takes on complexity on the finish, and though there's no shortage of tannins, balances out in the end. Best from 2008 through 2012. 270 cases made. Score: 91. —James Laube, February 28, 2007.
